Delphine teaches every class herself. Each session lasts two hours, in a small group of no more than ten people, and everyone works at their own pace: drawing, painting or printmaking, as you choose, in the “all techniques” classes; drawing or painting from a live model on Wednesday mornings. Materials are provided.
We have all wanted to take up drawing at some point.
We did it as children, spontaneously, with more or less enthusiasm. We all had drawing lessons at school. And the older we get, the harder it is to get started on our own. We hesitate, we worry: “what is going to appear at the tip of the pencil? will it look like anything? will I manage?”
Then one day, we take the plunge, we push open the studio door and there, we feel a little lighter. Because in the studio there is someone to guide you, and other students too.
In the studio, Delphine is there to welcome you and guide you according to your wishes and your needs. You learn the basics of drawing if you need to: you learn to look, to see things differently, how a face is put together, the space an ear takes up, the shape a figure makes. You learn to look at things all over again.
Learning to draw can also mean, for those who want it: learning perspective, vanishing lines, the different kinds of stroke, and then, in a second stage, values, shadow and light. You learn to give volume to objects, to hair. You make the different tools your own: charcoal, oil pastels, pencils and so on.
Delphine du Mérac offers painting classes in her studio. Because it is hard to paint at home, on your own. And also because you need to acquire techniques to go further in your ability to express yourself.
At the Atelier du Mérac, you can learn the basics of painting: making a sketch, composing the picture, harmony of colours and tones, values and so on. But also the techniques of flat colour, glazing and wash. You will learn to choose your brushes well and to make your own colours by mixing pigments. Gouache and acrylic are offered, as well as Indian ink and coloured inks.
Everyone sets the tone of their own learning. Everyone chooses their own subject (photographs, paintings, objects, imagination). In the studio there are plenty of sources of inspiration (folders sorted by theme). You can also start from your own imagination. The painting class is not academic: Delphine adapts to each student. Everyone comes to the studio with what they already know and what they want to do. It is perfectly possible to start a session with painting and then move on to drawing. Just as you can start a painting by working on a sketch.
You can paint on paper or on canvas boards. The price of the classes includes a materials fee of €1.50 per class, a small contribution towards costs. For this fee, the studio provides the basic materials (paint, brushes and pencils, canvas boards and canvas paper up to 50 x 65 cm); for stretched canvases, remember to bring your own.
Halfway through the class, there is a coffee break, to step back from the work in progress. It is also a chance to talk about all sorts of subjects related to art, to exhibitions, and even to films worth seeing!
Engraving is another way of drawing.
In the studio, you can try your hand at drypoint and burin engraving. On Rhenalon plates.
You will learn to prepare your drawing, engrave your plate, ink it and wipe it before it goes through the press.
It is also a way of working with shadow and light.
Once you have had a taste of it, it is hard to stop!
